My life has not always been easy. I have experienced a lot of pain in my lifetime, including loosing my 11 year old half-brother to Leukemia at a young age. Truly, I had no idea what was happening. I was only 7, and we did not talk about his death much. However, it took such a toll on my family.
I feel sometimes like being blessed today means that I have to remember to feel that way. Not to wallow in the past or worry about the future. I have to take moments to love life and be grateful, and let those high points of joy fill my soul. I practice every day gratitude and joy therapy. It doesn’t just happen automatically for me.
I love this Calm the Chaos journal by Nicola Taggart which has helped me so much stay in the present.
When I think about critically ill children and how much they endure at a young age, giving them joy is a greatest gift. The innocence and the pure happiness of children is a beautiful thing.
Make a Wish Foundation
Tens of thousands of volunteers and donors have the vision to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with critical illness. A wish is granted every 34 minutes in the US, and it can be a game changer for these children. There are 8,000 kids waiting for a wish today.
When I read these stories of kids who can experience pure joy for a day as a princess at Disneyland or on a Firetruck riding about, I think of how healing joy can be. That a period without doctors and worries may be just what they need to heal or find some peace. Experiencing a dream come true.
As a parent, watching your child get their wish has to be powerful as well.
Making Wishes Come True
If you want to see some of the amazing wishes that have been fulfilled here are their stories.
Compelling excerpt from the Make a Wish Website:
A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, more willing and able to battle their critical illnesses. For many, the wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illnesses. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals say, the wish experience works in concert with medicine to make their patients feel better emotionally and even physically. That is why wishes matter. That is why we grant wishes.
Some of the Wishes Made:
- 7 year old William wished to be a pilot. Read his story.
- 6 year old Noah wished to be a cowboy and learned to ride horses.
- Cindi wanted to be an ear, nose, throat doctor.
Kids can wish to be something, like these above. They can meet someone or go somewhere. Their stories are amazing.
